Sea Turtle Hatching in Florida 🇺🇸

° More than 100,000 endangered sea turtles nest on Florida beaches every summer
° One of the most important sea turtle nesting areas in the world
° Nearly 90% nesting in the U.S. occurs in Florida from March through October each year
° One nest can contain a LOT of eggs – 100 eggs or more in a single nest
° Several species: loggerheads | green sea turtles | leatherbacks
° NO parental care after the eggs are laid
° Most hatchlings emerge at night
~ Use moonlight to navigate from nest to the shore
° Cooler temperatures help reduce risk of predators and overheating
° Vulnerable on land and at sea
° They are incredibly tiny – usually only 2-3 inches long
° Immediately have to make their way across the beach to the ocean
° Instinctively move toward the brightest and lowest horizon
° Once in the water, they enter a “swimming frenzy”
° They enter the “Lost Years” because they are difficult to track
° Female turtles often return to the beach where they were hatched to lay their own eggs

‼️ DON’T try to help them‼️
