° Protect more than 70,000 acres of rugged badlands
° Divided into:
~ South Unit = near Medora
~ North Unit = near Watford City
~ Elkhorn Ranch Unit = former ranch
° Known for unique geological formations called “hoodoos”
~ tall, thin spires of rock created by erosion
~ harder stone at the top protects the softer rock at the base
° Surprising mix of landscapes containing: prairie grasslands | wooded river bottoms | cottonwood groves | badlands
° Incredibly colorful with layers of sediment
° Especially dramatic around sunrise & sunset
° Little Missouri River carved the badlands over millions of years
° Winding course of the river creates: dramatic cliffs | colorful rock formations | grassy valleys
° Roosevelt first came to North Dakota in 1883 to hunt bison
° The park currently protects a large herd of American Bison
° Bison nearly disappeared and returned to the park in 1956
